External Clocks

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this as I don't know the answer I just have the question.

How do you interface an external clock source to a pic? I have been looking around and have not found anything really on this topic. I have always used the internal oscillator in all my projects as they do not need to be that accurate, but I want to start working with USB and other serial communications, which require a more stable or faster clock. I know there are several different types of clocks available to use, but the two I keep seeing are RC (resistor capacitor) and crystals. Reading about them I have found there pros and cons but no one ever talks about how to wire them. Ive seen them with between 2 and 4 pins. I'm sure the reason that this topic is never brought up is that it is just a very simple concept. So if someone would not mind enlightening me on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.
