deciphering an application circuit--UAA2016

I Emailed ON Semiconductor but they can't provide any input like HUUA??
Found this device while trying to build a temp ctr soldering iron as per this HAJJO schematic http://www.n0ss.net/hakko_936_schem-pcb_&_mod_v1r7.pdf
Built and found several descripencies between the PCboard layout and the schematic.
Well instead of trying to decipher the problems I am going with a PIC controlled soldering iron.
Could use the easy way out by just using an opti-coupler/triac (ON/OFF) but this UAA2016 looks like a better control solution using PWM via zero crossing.
The app circuit has lots of math which I get lost with. Hoping someone can config the app circuit then I can breadboard and go from there.
Page 3 on datasheet has app circuit.

Looks like you have quite a project on your hands there!

what microcontroller are you using for the circuit?

Going to use an 18F4520 or 452. basically same pic.
If I can't figure out the UAA2016 then just using a opti coupler (ho hum)
My Komec 936 broke the heater element, purchased the HAKKO907 iron off Ebay for $12.
I got spoiled using a temp ctr iron and mst of hat I have to assemble is sMD so I am kinda at a standstill. The PIC ctr soldering iron is going to be perf boarded w/ dip.
will post present schematic after I add an opti-couplier, couple of LEDs then compress. Its using Diptrace (GREAT PROGRAM)

found an archived data sheet for the UAA2016
http://www2.renesas.com/maps_download/pdf/SEA-1201A.pdf
any help would be appreciated.

What help are you looking for with it?

I contacted ON semiconductor about the app schematic on page 3 but no help.
Going a different direction at present just using an MOC3023 opti coupler.
Would really want to use the UAA2016 but??

What do you think the advantage would be using the UAA2016 over an opto-coupler?

The advantage would be I could then utilize zero cross thus less shock of ON/OFF.
Better control of the temperature as well by using PWM.
The HAKKO soldering iron to mention one, utilizes zero crossing.

Oh I see now!

Very good practice :D
