Not only was this a great read but its also great information Brad, keep up with these documents of your little experiments.
I also recommend the Saleae Logic Analyser Its got me out of alot of communication issues with SPI, I2C. I have even used it with my RX and TX receivers.

If you don't know what Voltage your country is using, you shouldn't be doing electronics

I thought it would be a good idea to write down findings because I seem to forget them when another project comes along later down the track.
