I saw L.I.O.S. the ten dollar robot on Hackaday and thought that this would be a good place to start. He listed cheap parts from Digikey which makes it really really cheap because these hobby sites would know how to really really mark up the price. I would also like to make it clear that I did not invent this robot.
They are using a PIC12F683 to do the brain.
I would like to teach my son's class how to do this. I'm also wondering what else I could add to this robot.

Perhaps you could incorporate an ultra sonic transducer to detect distance / walls etc...
