Using a "HAKKO 907" iron off EBAY FOR $12 here is my present design for the schematic.
Could use maybe a 18F1320?
Would like to use zero crossing but working on deciphering the UAA2016 or incorporating a H11AA1.
NOTE this is my beginning design. NEEDS more work
will post source for iron as well as the app using the MOC3023 / H11AA1 schematic.

Re: PIC controlled soldering iron
Are you getting a board made up for it?
Do you think there would be a market to sell these as a kit of some sort?

Re: PIC controlled soldering iron
Going to DIY the board but need to get all the bugs outta the circuit.
Got the LCD to work, Got the ADC inputs to work but need to have display show BOTH inputs. BUT the display went berzerko- bunch of graphic but nothing to read. WHY??
I am leaning towards the fact that I have 7inches of flat ribbon cable (looks like strips of metal bands encased in a clear plastic?) and perhaps there's a max length of cable??
Tried resetting, turning off etc. It did this before but went away after setting overnight.
I might have mentioned? that in the future I will add a zero crossing detection that's looks like it could be added anytime, just make provisions on the board. see page 3 http://www.fairchildsemi.com/an/AN/AN-3006.pdf
