And I'm pretty sure you don't have to buy a USB thumbdrive to run Linux but it is almost turning into a requirement to learn these days.

It looks as though they have found a way to make money off something that you can make yourself 
I use unetbootin to make bootable linux USB sticks. They are very handy!
